Fall Color & Leaf Season in Tri-Cities, Tennessee

When it turns, top to bottom

• Roan Mountain's highlands — Carvers Gap at about 5,500 feet, Round Bald, Roan High Knob just under 6,300: the last days of September into the first half of October. The spruce-fir on top stays dark green; the color is on the slopes and along TN 143 and NC 261 as you climb.
• Unaka Mountain and the Beauty Spot, Holston Mountain, the Iron Mountains above Shady Valley (3,500–4,500 feet): the first two weeks of October.
• Watauga Lake, the Doe River gorge, Shady Valley, the town of Roan Mountain (about 2,000–3,000 feet): mid to late October.
• The valleys — Johnson City at about 1,600 feet, Kingsport at 1,200, Bristol at 1,700, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, Erwin: the last week of October into the second week of November. Bays Mountain, Buffalo Mountain, Steele Creek, Warriors' Path, Sycamore Shoals and the Tweetsie Trail all peak here, after the mountains have gone brown.

Add or subtract a week for the year. A dry September brings color early and dull; a wet one with cool nights holds it late and bright. The reports linked below beat this page.

Roan Mountain, the local's mountain

TN 143 out of the town of Roan Mountain climbs from Roan Mountain State Park — about 3,000 feet in the Doe River valley — to Carvers Gap on the state line in eight miles and 2,500 feet. Park at the gap and walk the Appalachian Trail north over Round Bald and Jane Bald toward Grassy Ridge: a mile and a half of open bald with the whole region laid out in color below you, and the best two hours of fall within an hour of Johnson City. The paved spur to the Rhododendron Gardens and Roan High Knob is gated for the winter and has closed for repairs in recent years, so check the Forest Service's Roan pages before you count on it. From the North Carolina side, NC 261 up from Bakersville is the quieter approach.

Parking is the catch. The Carvers Gap lot is small and fills by mid-morning on October weekends, and the road isn't an overflow lot — cars on both shoulders of 143 have blocked the highway. Go on a weekday, be there by 8, or hike up from the state park instead.

The other drives

• Unaka Mountain Scenic Drive — the loop out of Erwin on TN 395, up gravel Forest Road 230 over the top past the Beauty Spot, and back down TN 107. High-clearance is recommended on the gravel; the Beauty Spot is 40 minutes from Johnson City, and Forest Road 230 closes mid-December to mid-March.
• The Snake — US 421 from Bristol over Holston Mountain into Shady Valley and on to Mountain City: 489 curves, three mountains, one valley, with the Shady Valley Country Store at 421 and TN 91 as the halfway stop. It's a motorcycle road on weekends; go early. TN 133 north out of Shady Valley past Backbone Rock to Damascus is the bonus.
• Watauga Lake — US 321 from Hampton along the lake toward Butler, back on TN 67 through Elizabethton, with the overlooks above the dam.
• Over the line — Grandfather Mountain, the Linn Cove Viaduct and Linville Falls are an hour and a half from Johnson City by US 19E, but the Parkway near Linville Falls is still broken by Helene repairs into late 2026; check the Parkway's road status first. Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers are the same distance from Bristol, wild ponies included; the upper 17 miles of the Virginia Creeper Trail stay closed for Helene rebuilding until March 31, 2027.
• The Smokies — Newfound Gap is two and a half to three hours from Johnson City, an all-day trip. Kuwohi Road is open through November 29, a $5 parking tag is required for any stop over 15 minutes, and October is the park's busiest month.

• Virginia's weekly fall foliage report from the Department of Forestry — the state peaks October 10 to 31, southwest first.

Helene, two falls on

Carter and Unicoi counties took some of Helene's worst in September 2024 — the Nolichucky through Erwin, the Doe River through Roan Mountain, Hampton and Elizabethton, US 19E. The highways are back. Some trails and forest roads in those drainages still aren't, or run on new routes, so before you drive to a trailhead you last saw in 2024, check the Cherokee National Forest alerts above, and don't be surprised to find a creek where the parking lot was.

Crowds, honestly

• The first weekend of October is the region's busiest of the year: the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough and the Apple Festival in Erwin land together, and rooms sell out for thirty miles. Book early or day-trip it.
• Carvers Gap on a peak Saturday is a parking problem, not a hike. Weekdays.
• The Snake belongs to motorcycles on fall weekends. Drive it Tuesday.
• Bays Mountain and Steele Creek are the answer when you don't want to drive at all — they peak the first week of November, in town, with parking.
